What is Global warming?
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary's definition of Global warming is: "A warming of the Earth's atmosphere and oceans that is predicted to result from an increase in the greenhouse effect caused by air pollution."
What Causes Global Warming?
Global Warming is caused by the release of Greenhouse gases, such as Carbon, through burning the fossil fuels in motorized vehicles and factories. Greenhouse gases are gases that build up in the atmosphere and cause the sun's heat to get trap, warming up the Earth. Not only do they warm up the air, but they also warm up Earth's oceans. While electrical and heat production is the main contributor to the emissions of greenhouse gases, there are several other contributors, such as agriculture, that add on to the gas. If you read deeper into this page, you will find more information on what contributes to the emissions.
As previously stated factories and vehicles add massive amounts of Greenhouse gases. Factories are the main culprit. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in 2010 energy producing factories amounted for 25% percent of the total emissions. Factories emit Carbon and water vapor. The water vapor might not seem like a bad thing, but too much water vapor leads to increased precipitation, that can lead to flooding and an overall rise to the sea level. Carbon on the other hand is alot harder to get rid of and it can cause huge problems. One problem is it increases the average temperature of the Earth which leads to incredibly dangerous conditions such as drought which can trigger wildfires. Another major contributor to the greenhouse gas emissions is agriculture. This might seem bizarre, but if you really look at the reason why it contributes so much it really makes sense. First off you need to understand how and why agriculture releases so many greenhouse gases (GHGs). Many people would think that if we grow a lot of plants and produce it will take the CO2 out and give us Oxygen. That is only partially true. With my knowledge from AP Biology, I learned what really happens. As plants grow an live they absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and combine that with water to create glucose (sugar) and Oxygen. Sounds good right? It is a good thing until you cut down these plants, after you cut down the plant whether it is a tree, grass, corn, or even weeds when cut, they release the carbon back into the atmosphere. planting the plants is just a temporary fix. Plants are not the only thing that releases GHGs. Cows are another big player with their emissions. Cows release Methane on top of the CO2 from their respiration. According to One Green Planet, the methane that is released from the cows and other various things holds heat 100 times more than CO2. This means that having even a small percentage of the methane can lead to drastic changes in Global Warming.
